Wood Heater Maintenance- Keeping it Going

As we know at Heating & Outdoors by Glendale Warehouse, a wood heater is a significant – and beautiful – investment in your home. As with any investment, protecting it makes a lot of sense. While wood heaters are pretty robust things, they still need some care. Regular servicing and wood heater maintenance will keep yours working perfectly for years.

Day To Day

While a bed of ash helps to keep your fire burning, too much will prevent it burning at its best. Check the ash levels, and remove all but around 1-2cm as needed. Ensure that soot is swept from the inside of the heater and, if the glass is dirty, clean it with some damp newspaper dipped in the ash. Ash works as an amazing abrasive and will have your glass looking great!

Regularly

In the hottest part of the stove, you’ll find the baffle plate. This simple piece of metal plays an important part in protecting the heater & flue. However, it can easily become coated in soot and creosote, which not only affects the efficiency of the heater, but can also be a hazard, so keeping it clear is important.

Make sure to regularly examine the whole unit for damage such as rust and cracking, as these are signs of problems that need checking.  Don’t forget to the check the rope seal around the door. If it’s worn or squashed then your fire won’t be operating at its best, so should be replaced.

Annual Maintenance

The flue is also part of the wood heater system. Over time, it too can become coated in deposits, which not only reduce efficiency, but can also increase the risk of chimney fires. It’s important that you get it swept by a qualified expert at least once a year.
