Get Your Wood Heater Burning

Wood heaters are increasingly popular with homeowners. At Heating & Outdoors by Glendale Warehouse, we’re not surprised. As well as being a stylish and attractive addition to your home, they’re also efficient. However, if you’re new to wood heaters, getting yours started can prove more difficult than you might expect. That’s why we at Heating & Outdoors by Glendale Warehouse have compiled these top tips for getting your wood heater burning brightly.

Getting It Alight

Firstly, does your wood heater have a grate? If it doesn’t, it can be tempting to clear the firebox completely after each use. However, leaving a layer of around 1-2cm of ash in the bottom of the heater will help retain heat, making it easier to start your fire, and keep it burning.

Whatever type of wood heater you have, you’ll need loosely scrunched paper, kindling and firelighters to get it started. Create a good depth of kindling, with the firelighters spread throughout. Don’t skimp on the kindling – you may be surprised how much you need to get enough heat into the bed. Check that the air controls are open, and leave them open for 20 minutes to allow enough oxygen for efficient burning.

Keeping It Alight

Once the kindling has burnt down, and the coals are glowing red, you can add your logs. Logs should be dry and well-seasoned, and adding three or four rather than just a couple will improve burning.

Knowing when to add new logs can be a matter of experience. Too soon, or too late, and it will be difficult to get them alight. Wait until the existing logs have almost burned away before adding the new ones, making sure that the fire bed is still glowing hot. Each time you add new fuel, open the air vents for around 15-20 minutes.
